Kayapalat, in collaboration with Save The Children, recently held a two-day consultation workshop in Janakpurdham focused on the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and its implications for children and youth in Madhesh Province. The workshop aimed to educate participants about the NDC, identify existing gaps, and empower young voices in climate action.

During the program, Diwakar Uprety, founder of Kayapalat, provided valuable insights into the challenges posed by a lack of awareness regarding the NDC. He highlighted that many people remain uninformed about its significance, which has hindered effective engagement in climate initiatives. Uprety emphasized the importance of Climate Finance and how it can be leveraged to address these gaps, encouraging participants to brainstorm solutions that could be implemented in their communities.

As a relatively new topic in Janakpurdham, the NDC generated significant interest among attendees, fostering vibrant discussions about its relevance to local challenges. The workshop underscored key issues such as ensuring access to clean water, managing urbanization, upholding children’s rights, and actively engaging young people in sustainable development planning.

The workshop featured contributions from Save The Children, with Jhamkeshwor Ojha presenting an overview of the consultation’s objectives and outcomes. Nabin Gyanwali followed with a summary of the NDC outcomes, sparking dialogue among participants about their potential impacts. One of the most significant moments came when Jyoti Thakur and Noor Mohammad presented a commitment and suggestion paper to representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Madhesh Province. This document aims to convey the collective voices and recommendations from the workshop to the Central Ministry of Forest and Environment, advocating for more inclusive policies and initiatives.

The major outcomes of the consultation reflect a strong commitment to enhancing community resilience and addressing climate change challenges. Participants expressed a united desire to ensure clean water access, promote sustainable urbanization, protect children’s rights, and engage youth in environmental stewardship.

Through this workshop, Kayapalat and Save The Children have successfully empowered young voices to play a critical role in climate action. By equipping them with knowledge and providing a platform for dialogue, they are fostering a generation that is not only aware of climate issues but also actively engaged in shaping a sustainable future for their communities.
