On August 11, 2024, Kayapalat, in partnership with the Korea SHE Foundation, launched the HAWA BADLAU Campaign in Kathmandu, focusing on the critical issue of air pollution—a growing crisis in Nepal that poses severe health risks and environmental challenges. The campaign brought together a group of passionate youth, known as Hawa Badlau Champions, who are determined to tackle this pressing issue.
The orientation program was designed to equip these young leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively advocate for cleaner air. The participants were introduced to the alarming statistics surrounding air pollution in Nepal, including its role as a leading cause of respiratory illnesses, the detrimental impact on children and the elderly, and its contribution to climate change. The discussion highlighted the urgent need for governmental action to address the sources of pollution, such as vehicle emissions, industrial discharge, and the widespread use of biomass for cooking.

Clean air expert Bhola Bhattarai led an insightful session, shedding light on the severe consequences of air pollution on public health and the environment. Bhattarai emphasized that while the government has made some efforts, these have been insufficient given the scale of the problem. He urged the youth to step up as the driving force behind activism, pushing for stronger policies and greater accountability from the government. “Youth needs to lead the activism to make the government more responsible in tackling air pollution,” Bhattarai asserted, underscoring the power of collective action.
Inspired by the session, the Hawa Badlau Champions brainstormed and planned various creative advocacy actions. These include launching digital campaigns to raise public awareness, engaging in community outreach to educate the masses about air pollution, and utilizing the Right to Information (RTI) Act to demand transparency from the government on pollution data and mitigation efforts. By empowering themselves with knowledge and strategic planning, these young advocates aim to hold the government accountable and drive substantial change in air quality management.
The HAWA BADLAU Campaign represents a significant step towards mobilizing youth to combat air pollution in Nepal, highlighting the crucial role of civic engagement in addressing environmental issues. With their passion and innovative approaches, the Hawa Badlau Champions are set to lead the way in advocating for a cleaner, healthier future.
