Janakpurdham, 5 September 2026 — Human rights defenders and representatives of various civil society organizations gathered in Janakpurdham for a tribute ceremony to remember those who lost their lives in the devastating floods and landslides that struck Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and other parts of Nepal on 26 August.
The ceremony was held under the chairpersonship of Dhanusha Chief District Officer Prem Prasad Luitel. Addressing the gathering, Speaker of Madhesh Province Ram Ashish Yadav said that Nepal is facing a serious natural disaster and called on everyone to fulfill their humanitarian responsibility toward affected communities.
“This is a time of crisis. People affected by the floods and landslides need our support and solidarity,” Speaker Yadav said, emphasizing the need for collective efforts in rescue, relief, and recovery.
As a mark of respect, participants lit candles in memory of those who lost their lives. Speaker Yadav also appreciated the efforts of human rights defenders and social organizations that have been actively supporting communities affected by the disasters. He encouraged these humanitarian efforts to continue until affected families receive the support they need.
The tribute ceremony brought together representatives from the National Human Rights Commission, INSEC, Kayapalat, Amnesty International, Aafno Nepal, and other civil society and human rights organizations. The gathering provided a space to remember the victims, express solidarity with affected families, and call for continued support for communities facing the consequences of the disaster.
The recent floods and landslides have caused significant loss of life and damage across several districts. According to the figures shared at the event, 1,250 people have lost their lives, while 162 people from Madhesh Province remain unaccounted for.
The gathering served as a reminder that disaster response is not only about rescue and relief, but also about protecting the dignity, rights, and safety of affected communities. Participants called for continued solidarity, coordinated response, and stronger efforts toward recovery and rebuilding.
